No one seems to know exactly what Nintendo is waiting for at this point. Whenever the Switch 2 is mentioned during new game showcases, Nintendo clarifies that they will not be releasing any information about the Nintendo Switch successor.

Meanwhile, the rest of the world is far less patient. By now, nearly every detail about the Nintendo Switch 2, from its functionality to its appearance, has been leaked—except for its official name.

This morning, a new GameStop listing revealed that the Switch 2 will support MicroSD cards, with storage options ranging from 256 GB to 512 GB for expanded game capacity. Reports from about a week ago suggest that the Switch 2’s power may rival the PS4 Pro when docked and align with the base PS4 when in handheld mode. Digital Foundry even dedicated an entire segment to a leaked motherboard purportedly from the Switch 2.

Accessory maker Genki has already begun showcasing products designed for the Switch 2, using what appears to be a mockup of the console. While there are additional leaks, the overarching narrative is clear: the Nintendo Switch 2 is shaping up to be a more powerful version of the current Switch, with a design that closely resembles its predecessor.

This represents a significant shift for Nintendo, which has historically introduced bold changes with each console generation—from the NES to the SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, and Switch. The only notable exception is the Wii U, whose incremental changes compared to the Wii, combined with its confusing branding, contributed to poor sales.

It remains to be seen if the general public will get the message this time around. Even with Xbox and PlayStation generations, the form factors are much different, and with Nintendo’s odd naming proclivities, if they end up naming this the New Nintendo Switch Plus or something, if it looks identical to the old one, many outside of the core gaming sphere may just think it’s a sort of upgrade like the OLED model, rather than an entire new console generation.

The most likely option, of course, is that whatever initial confusion there could be, the Switch 2 will ultimately be a massive seller like the first. The original Switch is now the third best-selling piece of video game hardware of all time with 146 million units sold, behind only its own DS and then the PS2. 100 million is likely an easy mark to hit. But will it surpass the original? That remains to be seen. But at this point, Nintendo should just…reveal it, barring even more leaks that are coming out practically every week.
